Lifeguard Position Description
Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, a lifeguard will ensure safety in all aquatic environments and comply with the standards of the certification held as well as the YMCA’s mission and teaching philosophy. The lifeguard is responsible for keeping all participants safe while using the aquatic facilities. Lifeguards primary responsibility is to scan the pool, enforce rules and maintain a safe aquatic environment. Lifeguards are to role model the four character values Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility. Lifeguards will be responsible for knowing all emergency procedures and YMCA policies regarding the aquatic environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
These are the principal activities of the Lifeguard and are not meant to be all inclusive. Other responsibilities, duties, and tasks can be assigned by the position’s supervisor and/ or the CEO. It is the Lifeguard’s responsibility that the following takes place:
Enforce all rules and policies equally and fairly.
Be responsible for knowing and assisting in performing the Emergency Action Plan (EAP). As well as completing and submitting accident/incident reports IMMEDIATELY after occurrence.
Notify the Aquatics Coordinator or other appropriate staff member whenever a potentially serious/dangerous problem is noticed concerning an aquatic area.
Be responsible for renewing all required certifications. Instructors are also encouraged to continue their aquatics education through additional trainings.
Be responsible for finding your own qualified substitute for any absence.
Complete all required employment records, including your time cards, in an honest and timely manner.
Be responsible for safety of participants and never leave the area unsupervised.

Qualifications:
Current certification in Lifeguarding with CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration from the American Red Cross, YMCA or other nationally recognized organization. Waterfront module preferred.
