Sherman Lake Scholars Pod Leader

Position Summary

To further the mission of Sherman Lake YMCA and role model honesty, caring, respect and responsibility (HCRR) through the overall supervision and program delivery for the youth, staff, families and guests in our programs and visiting. 

Under the supervision of the Camp Director and/or the Assistant Camp Director, the responsibility of a Pod Leader is to coordinate all aspects of a high quality, safety centered and HCRR program that best serves our Sherman Lake YMCA community. As part of the camp team, a Pod Leader will carry out responsibilities in accordance with the established operating policies and procedures of the YMCA, ACA and county, state and federal agencies.

This is a part-time position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Serve as Pod Leader for pod of 8-10 scholars 

  2. Set up pod community using Community Commitment, team building activities and HCRR deck to create a safe learning environment

  3. Promote academic learning of each scholar by assisting with technology needs and problem solving alongside scholars with online school work

  4. Set up and facilitate all camp programs such as climbing, archery, fire building, kayaking or canoeing, orienteering, nature and art (training is provided)

  5. Adhere to all COVID-19 safety procedures

  6. Use positive behavior management techniques to approach conflict resolution

  7. Promote character development and social emotional learning in program delivery

  8. Recognize scholars and participants for their personal growth, exemplary behavior and skill attainment

  9. Take responsibility and demonstrate keeping Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Center ‘like new forever’

  10. Attend mandatory staff training and professional development sessions

  11. Other duties as assigned - be flexible - camp is often unpredictable and there will be times when you will be requested to help in addition to your principal activities

Qualifications

A Pod Leader’s must be a minimum of 18 years old and available Monday - Friday beginning Tuesday, September 8th. Applicant must be able to attain CPR & First Aid certification (training provided) along with lifeguard certification, unless exempted by the Camp Director.

This position has a significant impact on the effectiveness with which the YMCA accomplishes its goals and objectives in service to the community.  The incumbent has an impact on the community’s understanding of the YMCA movement.

The effectiveness of this position should be measured by:

  1. 100% scholar and parent satisfaction and the operation of a SAFE program.

  1. Sound administration of the Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Center program function evident in purposeful and coordinated programs, good public relations and understanding, and good records.

  2. Maintain a culture steeped in HCRR and a positive work environment, for HCRR and a positive work environment, for scholars and staff as measured through surveys.

  3. High morale of the employed staff and effective involvement with scholars.

  4. Measurable improvement in the social characteristics of the participants.
